This is the most common setup path. It takes about 2 minutes and doesn't require touching any code.
- 1. Download the plugin
On your AI Tracker dashboard, open your site's Connect tab, make sure the WordPress option is selected, and click Download AI Tracker plugin (.zip). Save it somewhere you can find it — your Downloads folder is fine.
Don't unzip the file. WordPress installs it as a zip, as-is. - 2. Log into your WordPress admin
Go to your website's admin login — usually your domain followed by
/wp-admin(for exampleexample.com/wp-admin) — and sign in. - 3. Install the plugin
In the left-hand menu of your WordPress admin:
- Click Plugins, then Add New Plugin
- Near the top of the page, click Upload Plugin
- Click Choose File, and select the zip file you downloaded in step 1
- Click Install Now
- Once it finishes, click Activate Plugin
- 4. Open the plugin's settings
After activating, look in the left-hand admin menu for a new item called AI Tracker (it has an eye icon). Click it. If you don't see it there, it also appears under Settings → AI Tracker.
- 5. Paste in your API key
Go back to your AI Tracker dashboard's Connect tab and copy your site's API key — a code starting with
aivt_. Paste it into the “Site API key” field on the WordPress settings page, leave “Dashboard URL” blank, and click Save API key. Each website you track has its own API key — make sure you copy the key for the site you're currently setting up, not a different one. - 6. Send a test ping (optional but recommended)
On the same settings page, click Send test ping. You should see a message like
HTTP 200, and a test visit should appear on your AI Tracker dashboard within a few seconds. This confirms the connection works without waiting for a real AI visit. - 7. You're done
That's the entire setup. The plugin now silently watches for AI-bot visits and reports them automatically — nothing more to configure. Head to your dashboard and watch the numbers start moving.
Common issues
Most likely cause: your site uses a caching plugin or a CDN that serves pages as static files, so WordPress never actually runs when a bot visits — nothing gets logged. See the FAQ page for the fix.
Some hosts block outgoing web requests from your server. Contact your hosting provider and ask them to allow outbound HTTPS requests.
Double-check the plugin actually activated: go to Plugins → Installed Plugins and confirm “AI Tracker Connector” shows as Active.
